چکیده

Session abstract: Sustainable natural resource management has become of crucial importance in the face of new challenges such as climate change and accelerated environmental degradation in a world of 7 billion people. In response, current international neoliberal policy formulation and implementation is focused around the management of comodified ‘ecosystem services’ such as carbon storage and biodiversity conservation. REDD+ and other payments for ecosystem services schemes require governments to establish mechanisms for monitoring these ecosystem services or natural goods. In the pursuit of assigning some form of ‘value’ to the environment and its services, together with the predominantly top-down vision governing the process of monitoring, the generally accepted approach has been to focus on highly quantitative forms of measurement and monitoring. Yet, in many countries where state and civic society resources, both financial and human are low, it is the local communities who are being asked to act as the stewards of ecosystems and actually do the 'management' and 'monitoring' on the ground. But to what extent do local communities living in these ecosystems have quantitative worldviews and means of communication? Studies, particularly on indigenous peoples, indicate the oral, relational, emotional, and visual, as important elements of how communities relate to their environment.

Time to Shell Out? Reflections on the RGS and Corporate Sponsorship

This paper reflects on lessons from the campaign against Shell’s sponsorship of the Royal Geographical Society in the mid-1990s, that took place in the aftermath of the execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other activists from the Ogoni region of the Niger delta. It argues that the continuing relationship between a fossil fuel multinational company and the professional body representing British...

The regulator of G protein signaling family.

Regulator of G protein signaling (RGS) proteins are responsible for the rapid turnoff of G protein-coupled receptor signaling pathways. The major mechanism whereby RGS proteins negatively regulate G proteins is via the GTPase activating protein activity of their RGS domain. Structural and mutational analyses have characterized the RGS/G alpha interaction in detail, explaining the molecular mech...

Radical scavenging and radiomodulatory effects of Psoralea corylifolia Linn. substantiated by in vitro assays and EPR spectroscopy.

The present study is the first report of the radiomodulatory effects of Psoralea corylifolia Linn. The extract (IBG-RA-26) prepared from P. corylifolia was chemically analysed by HPLC, LC-MS/MS and NMR. The total polyphenolic content of IBG-RA-26 was 0.287 mg/ml of quercetin equivalents. IBG-RA-26 exhibited a dose-dependent increase in 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging act...
